First Light
Limited edition of 4 Japanese woodblock prints, 1 block, 4 colours, 1 colour printed
First Light is a Mokuhanga botanical print. It is inspired by flora documented around Mt Fuji during my time in Japan. The image explores the excitement of discovering new plants growing around us everyday and the gold leaf application represents the sprinkle of morning dew.
This print features a plant that grows around the foothills of Mt. Fuji called locally called ‘Fuki’ or Sweet Colts Foot/ Butterbur (petasites japonicus). This print uses traditional Japanese techniques of applying gold leaf. I sprinkled gold leaf flakes after sizing the print with glue. The gold leaf is hard to capture efficiently on camera .
