MONKEY DISCO
Limited edition of 10 Japanese woodblock prints, made during my 2019 Summer artist’s residency in Kawaguchiko, Japan.
1 block, 10 colours- gold dust printing.
This piece was an exploration in colour, and I wanted to draw inspiration from the song ‘Monkey Disco’ by the psychedelic rock band Babe Rainbow. I wanted to imagine a setting where plants, animals and forms in a rainbow of colours would be at play. Almost like a vanishing parade of creatures on their way to a jungle party.
PRODUCTION NOTES:
This design was inspired by the song Monkey Disco by Babe Rainbow. With this piece I wanted to challenge and test out a few woodblock printing techniques.
The challenge was to print this piece using a single block to see if I could manage to avoid mixing the colours while printing. The front portion of the accordion also features 3 Japanese printing effects:
Kirazuri: Gold dust application
Karazuri: Blind emboss
Takuhan-zuri: frottage with a and a Tsurigane inkstone
