NEW SUN Series
Single set of 3 Japanese woodblock prints. 4 blocks. 4 colours. Japanese Kochi washi paper.
NEW SUN explores imagery of the rising sun in an abstract, dreamlike landscape where mountains and landmasses hung in the sky and textures of water, sand and air dotted every surface. The 3 part triptych shows the movement of the sun into it’s final place in the sky.
ALTERNATIVE VERSION: “SUN” (below)
From this print run, an alternative edition of 4 titled “Sun” was created. This is an edition of 4, depicting the sun in it’s midway position and is printed on Indian handmade paper that featured beautiful textures and sprinkles of plant matter in the paper.
PRODUCTION NOTES:
This print series started off as a simple exercise in carving and testing various Indian and Japanese handmade papers. The prints went through two sets of colour experiments: a warmer palette (above) and a series in blue which unfortunately didn’t survive a bout of mold. The warmer series which made the cut uses the Japanese printmaking technique of Bokaashi to show the various positions of the sun in the sky. I used this opportunity to also experiment various ways of using the tools I had to create dots, lines and various textures in carving.
